City of Urbandale Collaborating with YMCA and Goldfish Swim School to Provide Discounted Aquatics Programs for Residents

The Urbandale City Council recently approved agreements with the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and Goldfish Swim School to provide swim lessons and fitness classes at a subsidized rate for Urbandale residents.
In March, Urbandale officials temporarily closed the city-operated indoor public pool due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department quickly went to work securing alternative aquatics options for Urbandale residents until a decision could be made on when the city-operated pool would reopen.
“The Urbandale Indoor Public Pool is a popular community amenity”, said Parks & Recreation Director Jan Herke. “Having additional swimming and aquatics options for our residents during this time is very important to staff and the City Council.”
The YMCA will offer swim lessons at both the Walnut Creek and Waukee locations for Urbandale residents at a discounted rate of $85 per 6-class session. Classes are available for preschoolers (age 3-5) and school-age children (ages 5-12), with reduced class sizes and other safety measures in place to maintain a healthy environment while helping children become safe and comfortable in the water. In addition, Urbandale residents that are non-YMCA members can purchase a monthly Aqua Exercise Class Pass for only $50 per month. The monthly pass can be used at both the Walnut Creek and Waukee locations for up to four classes per week. Registrations for both swim lessons and aquatic fitness classes is now open. Urbandale residents do not need to be members of the YMCA to take advantage of these programs.
“The Y is the nation’s leader in water safety and swim instruction,” said Ruth Comer, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “We are so pleased to partner with the City of Urbandale to make sure residents have continued access to swimming lessons and water exercise programs. This is a great example of how public and nonprofit organizations can work together for the benefit of the community during these unprecedented times.”
Urbandale residents can also receive discounted swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School in Urbandale. Goldfish provides indoor, year-round swim instruction to children ages 4 months to 12 years old in a family-friendly setting with highly trained instructors, small class sizes, 90-degree pools, and a state-of-the-art water purification system. Goldfish offers perpetual lessons so families can enroll at any time throughout the year. In addition, families can easily schedule make up classes when needed. Goldfish offers weekly swim lessons for Urbandale residents at a discounted rate of $80 for a monthly membership. Periodically throughout the year, Goldfish Swim School will also offer week-long Jump Start Clinics for $95. Goldfish Swim School is working closely with local authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure the safest environment possible for staff and swimmers.
Co-owner and General Manager Anne O’Rear says, “We understand how important water safety is to all Urbandale families. We are excited to offer the Goldfish curriculum, high quality instruction, and a state-of-the-art facility to more and more local families. Our team wants to ensure that all children in our community have a safe, fun, and friendly place to learn this life-saving skill.”
City facilities will gradually reopen as conditions warrant, and a reopen date is still being evaluated. The Indoor Swimming Pool remains drained and will be closed at least through the end of 2020.  For the most up-to-date information visit
